DescriptionBlair House facade.JPG |
English: The Blair House (also known as the Blair-Lee House or the President’s Guest House), located at 1651–1653 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., near the White House in downtown Washington, D.C. The Blair House complex is comprised of four, adjoining, Federal-style row houses which serve as the official residence for guests of the President of the United States.
Built in 1824 as the private residence of Joseph Lovell, the eighth Surgeon General of the United States Army, the main building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The Blair House is also designated as a contributing property to the Lafayette Square Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. In addition to Lovell, previous occupants include Francis Preston Blair, Sr., Elizabeth Blair Lee, Samuel Phillips Lee, Montgomery Blair, George Bancroft, and U.S. President Harry Truman. The New Executive Office Building is visible in the background. |
