She went through the world doing good, leaving behindher a path of light. It was not her wealth, though she hadplenty of it; it was not position that counted with her; it wasthe use of wealth; the use of position, its faithfulness, its faith,its hope. Hisexemplan^ honesty and uprighteousness did not fail him in publicstation. In public as in private life, he has ever been the samestrict adherent of truth, the same champion of justice and thesame unswerving advocate of honest means and honest methods.Mr. Barnert from his young manhood had taken a deep interestin public affairs. \Vith him this inclination seemed to be aspecial genius for public and political life. His fellow citizens honored him, and he honored them inreturn in the faithful and conspicious discharge of officialduties. Paterson, in those days was naturally a Republicancity and notsvithstanding that the Republicans were in thecontrol in public office, Mr. Barnert, a sturdy Democrat then,as he is now, was delegated by the Board of Aldermen in 1870,to make a special investigation of the citys finances and taxaccounts.
