ector Judd Stewart thatCharnwoods very penetrating biographycreated a cult of Lincoln in England. Itsreception in America, following its publicationthere in 1917, was equally enthusiastic. Theenthusiasm, as Paul M. Angle later noted, waslasting and pointed to merits in the workbeyond its timeliness for the period of the finalthaw in Anglo-American relations. In 1935 RoyP. Basler thought that Carl Sandburg andNathaniel Wright Stephenson presented thebest version of the private Lincoln, butCharnwoods was still the best of the publicLincoln. As late as 1947, Benjamin P.Thomas, an excellent judge of such matters,called Charnwoods book the best one-volumelife of Lincoln ever written. Lincoln students may be a little unclear inregard to the precise reason Charnwood wrotehis book, but they are unanimous on the rea-sons for its high reputation and popularity.David M.
