Object Name Oil Painting - Benjamin Tallmadge, Jr. Object Number 1936-01-2 Description Oil on canvas portrait of Benjamin Tallmadge, Jr., (1792-1831) a 1/2 length image of a young man seated at one end of a straight back red upholstered sofa, his left elbow resting on a round pillow, his righthand on his knee. He faces slightly to the left, brown wavy hair and mutton chops, and brown eyes. He wears tan trousers, black jacket with roller collar, white waistcoat, white ruffle shirt, high white collar, black silk tie Comment Benjamin Tallmadge, Jr. (1792-1831), born the son of Mary Floyd and Benjamin Tallmadge, Sr, served in the US Navy on board the USS Constitution. He was called to service as a midshipman in 1815, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1825, during this time the boat sailed the Mediterranean Sea to protect American commerce. He died while serving in the US Navy near Gibraltar on June 20, 1831. He died unmarried. He received an honorary degree from Yale in 1830, and was an honorary member of that class. This was the year that the portrait was painted by Mount.
