Deutsch: Die Marmorbrüstung vor dem Porträt dient als Repoussoir zur Erzeugung einer größeren Tiefenwirkung. Wegen seines langen roten Talars über einem weissen Hemd, der Stola ("becho") über seiner rechten Schulter und dem charakteristischem schwarzen "Barett" ist der Porträtierte als Senator identifiziert worden. Seine Jugend steht in starkem Kontrast zu dieser Darstellung und weist darauf hin, dass der Abgebildete der venezianischen Adelsfamilie der Emo angehört, da das Bild 1864 aus dem Nachlass des Emo Capodilista in das Museum gelangt.
Italiano: Lontano dalla dimensione intimista, il ritratto celebra il ruolo dell’individuo all’interno di una precisa gerarchia sociale, assecondando così la volontà della committenza. Il taglio di tre quarti nega allo spettatore la visione frontale dello sguardo del personaggio ritratto, e quindi un approccio diretto, impedendo di coglierne le caratteristiche emotive a favore di una raffigurazione storicizzata e attenta al dato fisionomico. Il personaggio ci appare dietro un parapetto di marmo che funge da "repoussoir", spingendo la figura più in profondità nello spazio. È stato identificato come un senatore per la presenza della lunga veste scarlatta sopra la camicia bianca, la stola ("becho") sulla spalla destra e in capo la caratteristica "bareta" nera. Tuttavia, come qualcuno ha sottolineato, la sua giovane età contrasta con tale interpretazione. C'è chi suggerisce che il personaggio ritratto appartenga alla nobile famiglia veneziana degli Emo, in considerazione dell’arrivo del dipinto in Museo nel 1864 tramite il lascito Emo Capodilista.
