BELLEVILLE SOCIAL SURVEY 25 toys playing but not so well for the girls. What is most importantis not that the boy plays, but what he plays. Fine fun in snow-ball-ing and sledding is mentioned. Many of the boys write of playinggames. But a large percentage of the papers indicates conditionsnot favorable for play as well as undesirable play and activity. The papers show that the parents do not always make provisionfor the boy. Saturday afternoon, writes a twelve year old boy, Iwent to the house and got kicked out. Other boys speak of fighting.■We had a scrap over the sleds, and so the afternoon wore away, isthe account of his Saturday afternoon given by another twelve yearold boy. Other papers show how unorganized play may easily pass over into a scrap. Pretty soon me and got to scuffling and he hit me in the eye. Then I got his cap and run andhid it. Then he got mine.
