Description
English: Becton Gasworks

Inscribed at bottom, as title. A depiction of the jetty at the Beckton Gas Works by the marine artist William Lionel Wyllie. Colliers is moored at the distant jetty and another on buoys in the foreground. Beckton Gasworks was the subject of a painting that Wyllie exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881, though this study is probably a little later. The gasworks closed in 1969 and lay derelict for many years. The area has now been redeveloped into housing.
