Summary[edit]
DescriptionBeaver Dam, Medano Creek (33321312380).jpg |
Rain and snow showers are beginning to develop ahead of a big storm expected to hit tomorrow. The dunes are forecast to receive 7 to 11 inches of snow, with much higher amounts in the mountains above. This photo was taken along Medano Creek in Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. The Preserve is the mountain watershed of the dunefield, and features forests, streams, alpine lakes, and alpine tundra. While only 7 inches of precipitation falls each year on the valley floor, up to 50 inches of precipitation falls annually on the tops of the mountains above. This water flows around the dunefield, making the popular beach environment of Medano Creek each spring.
