DETAILED (MULTILINGUAL) DESCRIPTION AT THE HOLY SEE WEBSITE: of His Holiness Benedict XVI (The Holy See).

English: The of Pope Benedict XVI. Gules chapé ployé Or / "tierced in mantle". The crown with the episcopal miter plate is divided into three fields that carry specific heraldic symbols:
  • Left (heraldic dexter) of the
from the of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, where Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was Archbishop.
  • Right (heraldic sinister) the bear of St. Corbinian, patron saint of the diocese of Munich and Freising, from the city .
  • Below is a scallop, which stands for the pilgrimage. It refers to a legend about St. Augustine. The mussel is also found in the of Scots Monastery, Regensburg, in which Benedict XVI. began his career as a priest.
Behind the shield are the Keys of Heaven, which by Christian tradition were received by St. Peter from Jesus as a symbol of Papal authority. On top, it is adorned with a bishop's miter and a pallium instead of the traditional three-tiered papal tiara.
