Caption from the auctioneers website: "We are grateful to Alan Stubbs for identifying the present portrait on the basis of a comparison with a portrait by Sir Peter Lely, inter alia. Hortense Mancini was one of the six nieces of Cardinal Mazarin, who was Louis XIV's godfather and who effectively governed France during the regency of the King's mother, Anne of Austria. Voet painted a series of portraits of the celebrated Mancini beauties (alternatively attributed to Laurent Fauchier and Pierre Mignard), including a series of small portraits in the collection of Palazzo Spinola, Genoa (see J.Wilhelm, "Some unpublished portraits by Jacob Ferdinard Voet, or from his atelier", The Connoisseur, August, 1966, pp.251-256)."
