In this case a gumma occurred in the skin over theinternal malleolus after a kick (trauma is sometimesan exciting cause of gumma). The skin becameinfiltrated, swollen and red, and gradually brokedown, forming an ulcer with sharply cut edges anda base covered with tenacious, yellow deposit. Thepatient contracted a sore on the penis some yearspreviously, which was diagnosed as a soft chancre,and received no specific treatment. Three yearsafter infection a gumma developed in this situationand was treated for a long time with poultices, butwas afterwards healed by iodide of potassium inter-nally and mercurial ointment locally.
