Atatürk Boulevard, one of the major transportation projects of its time, opened in Unkapanı in 1943 to connect Aksaray to Beyoğlu and other routes. To construct the 44 meter-wide boulevard that led to Atatürk bridge many old wooden houses were destroyed. With the opening of the Haşim İşcan and Unkapanı underpasses in 1966 and the Aksaray underpass in 1977, the network of the boulevard extended and it became a major transportation axis between the Historical Peninsula and Beyoğlu. 1943’te Aksaray’ı Beyoğlu’na ve çevre yollara bağlamak amacıyla Unkapanı’nda açılan Atatürk Bulvarı, dönemin en önemli ulaşım projelerindendir. 44 metre genişliğe sahip bulvarın inşa sürecinde, yol güzergâhında bulunan ahşap yapılar yıkılarak çevre düzenlemesi yapıldı ve Atatürk Köprüsü’yle birleşim sağlandı. 1966’da Haşim İşcan ve Unkapanı geçitleri, 1972’de ise Aksaray geçidinin açılmasıyla bulvarın trafik ağı da genişledi; bulvar, tarihi yarımada ile Beyoğlu ulaşım aksının önemli bir noktası oldu.
