Asia: The East: Spring

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Asia: The East: Spring by David Hlynsky and Shirley Yanover was installed in 1997 and was commissioned for the Spadina LRT Route. Located at the intersection of Sullivan Street and Spadina Avenue in Toronto on the eastern streetcar platform, this piece is one of two parts of the installation created to commemorate the Asian and European immigrants of the area. The sculpture depicts a Chinese dragon passing through a red frame with blossoming fruit branches coming out of the top left corner. In her 2011 book, The Chinese in Toronto from 1878: From Outside to Inside the Circle, Arlene Chan states that this piece is meant to symbolize spring and hope for newcomers.
