Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Ashton Frost engine at Mill Meece Pumping Station, showing the low-pressure cylinder, its Corliss valves, and the valve gear. The low pressure cylinder uses the exhaust steam from the high-pressure cylinder and extracts more energy from it. The rectangular casing above the cylinder barrel is the steam manifold which supplies steam from the high-pressure cylinder beyond. The round pipe in front of the manifold supplies heating steam to the cylinder jacket. The the stems of the inlet valves project sideways above the cylinder at each end. Short rods connect the valves to the trip-gear mounted on the bracket in front. The cut-off of the low-pressure trip gear is adjusted manually with the small disc handwheel. The the exhaust valves are below the cylinder barrel. They are operated directly from the crankshaft, without trip-gear. Emerging from the centre of the cylinder cover, the tail rod transmits the power of the engine to the pump, out of shot to the right.
