And\vhat do you want, my good man? said the ladyvery austerely. * If you please, my lady, very ner-vously replied the man, Ive come for the corpse :what day do you wish the cremation and the funeralto take place? * Here is another of Mr. Robinss little stories, thetruth of which I can personally vouch for, as I myselfheard the royal servant who was present on the occa-sion referred to in the story relate it to the Rector ofHoly Trinity. It appeared, according to this man, thathe was actually standing behind Her Majesty QueenVictoria as she sat at dinner, with on one side of herthe then Archbishop of Canterbury, the gruff andgrumpy Dr. Temple, and on the other side Dr. RandallDavidson, the present Archbishop, but who was thenBishop of Winchester, a greater contrast than whomto the surly old prelate one could not possibly imagine.Her Majesty turned towards a certain colonial bishop.

THE SOLDIERS BISHOP 177 who was seated next to the Archbishop of Canterbury,and said, You know, Dr. So-and-So, I can well re-member you preaching at Balmoral twenty-two yearsago. The Bishop of Winchester then said : * Really, yourMajesty, your memory is marvellous, absolutelymiraculous. ** Nart at arl, snarled Dr. Temple, in his gruffesttone. I told Her Majesty myself before dinner ! This incident reveals each prelate exactly as hewas. In fact, it is an a:bsolute portrait in >vords ofeach man. Robins was very fond of the following story, whichreferred to a lady who came down to deliver a lectureat the Cavalry Barracks on a new system of calis-thenics, in which she was deeply interested, and ofwhich she was a famous exponent.
