Description
The experts at Bruun Rasmussen called this painting Sailing ship off the coast of Morocco (Sejlskib ud for Marokkos kyst). That is a bit vague, considering that the vessel is flying the flag of the Royal Danish Navy. Melbye was aboard Danish naval vessels going to the Mediterranean in the 1840s, and this might be a memory from those days. The date is not very clear, and might in fact be read as 1843 - and Melbye actually visited Marocco that year. Description of his travels in kulturarv.dk (in Danish).
