В многочисленном семействе великого князя Павла Петровича Протасова занималась воспитанием великих княжен — его дочерей. В Эрмитаже есть портрет А.С.Протасовой с девочками , написанный известной шведской художницей, Анжеликой Кауфман


Анна Степановна Протасова (1745 – 1826) – дочь сенатора Степана Фёдровича и Анисьи Никитишны, урожд. Орловой . Протасова, двоюродная племянница братьев Орловых. Любимая фрейлина Екатерины II. В 1785 году пожалована званием камер-фрейлены и «драгоценным портретом императрицы». Любимица Екатерины II, она, согласно должности, сопровождала императрицу во всех ее поездках.

Павел I в день коронации пожаловал ей орден св. Екатерины Малого креста. Присутствовала на последнем ужине в Михайловском замке 11 марта 1801 года. Александр I в 1801 году возвел ее в графское достоинство. До 1823 года оставалась камер-фрейленой императрицы Марии Федоровны. Замужем не была. Умерла в Петербурге и похоронена в Духовской церкви Александро-Невской лавры.

Это второй портрет А.С.Протасовой. В первый раз Левицкий писал её в 1790г.
