A typical American guide sign at a freeway exit. Notice the presence of an exit number, which indicates the distance of this exit, in miles, from the start of the highway.

Also notice the nearby warning sign indicating the speed, in miles per hour, which one should slow to in order to exit safely. Arrows on overhead signs are positioned over each lane of traffic for which the sign applies. Upward diagonal arrows indicate the lane is starting a ramp immediately after the sign.
