With the rotary alternator field in place, the total revolvingweight carried is 225 tons. This is carried by a thrust bearing and by twomain-shaft bearings. On the first 10,000 hp. machines installed thestandard combination roller and oil-pressure bearing employed utiUzed oilat 225 lb. pressure, which normally keeps the 225 ton load lifted off therollers. In case of failure of the oil-pressure, of course, the load is trans-ferred to the roller be^rings. Oil is suppHed by gravity to the upper bear-ings, being thence drained to the reservoir under the lower bearings, fromwhich it is pumped to central supply tanks. The type of thrust bearingused requires oil circulation at only atmospheric pressure and introduces alow degree of friction- Each main runner carries 20 buckets and weighs65 tons, w
