Del mismo modo que en Las meninas de Diego Velázquez, la menina María Agustina Sarmiento ofrece un búcaro rojo a la princesa Margarita de Austria, en este retrato de la niña Juana de Mendoza, es un enano quien le sirve el bucarito, pequeña vasija de tierra arcillosa que contenía agua perfumada, y que se comían luego para mantener la palidez de la cara, siguiendo la moda de la época, y por otros fines supersticiosos como regular la menstruación, como método anticonceptivo y como alucinógeno.
