| Description |
English: There were not many bridges on the Mosel River in 1960, My Volkswagen and I crossed the river on this current-powered ferry. There is an overhead cable across the river, but I cannot make it out in this photo.
The operator angles the ferry so that the current pushes it in the desired direction. Downstream is to the right, so the ferry is going away from the camera, toward the opposite bank. It has left the landing at the far right, and is taking a few pedestrians to a landing near Kattenes in the background. I probably crossed the Mosel here to see the castle at Alken. If so, I did not keep any photos of the castle. It was not a great day for photography. There is now a bridge across the Mosel River about 1 km (0.6 mi) upstream from this point. There were at least two ferries of this type on the Mosel in 2003, the last time we were there. One was at Klotten, and the other at Beilstein. |
