Summary[edit]

Description
English: Alfred Watkins' front door 5 Harley Court, close by the cathedral, was Alfred Watkins' home for the last 15 years of his life but he was born in Widemarsh Street and was a lifelong Herefordshire man. Although the plaque describes him, correctly, as a photographer and antiquarian, his name has come to be associated pre-eminently with the theory of ley-lines, those invisible connective pathways supposedly linking ancient features such as mounds, moats, hill forts, standing stones, wayside crosses and churches. His book The Old Straight Track (1925) remains the bible of the ley-line enthusiasts, who, while not supported by archaeologists, have continued to demonstrate the existence and significance of these alignments up to the present day.

As a photographer Watkins was responsible for the important invention of the "Bee Meter" to measure the intensity of light, one of which was used by Captain Scott's photographer in the Antarctic.
