Summary[edit]

Description

"Adoration of the Magi", painted about 1604 in India. Watercolor, ink, and gold on paper. Part of the exhibit "Art and Stories of Mughal India" at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

Christian missionaries began prosyletizing in India in the 1st century AD. The Mughals permitted widespread mission work, as they saw Christians as part of the same tradition laid down by Moses. Father Jerome Xavier wrote the "Mirror of Holiness" (Mir'at al-quds) from 1602 to 1604. The book contained meditations on a wide range of Christian themes.

This particular image was painted for Father Xavier's book, at the behest of Prince Salim of Allahabad. It depicts the Three Wise Men having rushed to adore the infant Jesus. Their exhausted camels pant for air and try to get to the water jugs, lower right.
