Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sketch for a humorous "trade card" (combination advertisement and business card) for one Théophile Belin (whose first name is ornamentally spelled with a Greek letter Theta), drawn by French caricaturist Adolphe Willette ca. 1900. Probably the actual printed cards would have contained additional text, otherwise it would be a "visiting card" (there is no address or profession marked). This jocularly depicts a medieval young woman confined in a chastity belt (though as a matter of historical fact the chastity belt was much more of a Renaissance phenomenon than medieval), and also a highly-caricatured pseudo-medieval man with a ring of keys who has entered by climbing a ladder to the balcony outside her window. The woman is drawn as quite cheerful, despite wearing nothing but her voluminous hair-covering headdress and the chastity belt...
