Description
English: This image shows an "acid tower" as formerly used for producing paper. The tower was used for the production of calcium bisulfite from sulfur and limestone. Crossen, Zwickau, Saxony, Germany.
Deutsch: Dieses Bild zeigt einen für die Zellstoffherstellung früher benötigten Säureturm in Zwickau/Crossen. Mittels eines Lastenaufzuges befördert man Kalksteine nach oben, diese kommen dann in die Röhre. Von oben rieselt man dann Wasser darauf, während von unten Schwefeldioxid beigefügt wird. Durch diesen chemischen Prozess entsteht Calcium-Bisulfit-Säure, mit der man in einem Zellstoffkocher Holzschnitzel auflösen kann. Durch diesen Aufschluss entsteht dann der Primärfaserstoff Zellstoff, den man zur Papierherstellung benötigt.

Français : Une "tour à acide" utilisée anciennement dans l'industrie papetière pour la synthèse du bisulfite de calcium à partir de calcaire et de souffre. La tour est remplie de blocs de calcaires sur lesquels de l'eau s'écoule en un film mince depuis des buses situées en haut de la tour. Au pied de la tour, le souffre est brulé pour former du dioxyde de souffre. Le dioxyde de souffre se dissout dans l'eau et forme de l'acide sulfurique. L'acide sulfurique réagit avec le calcaire (carbonate de calcium) et forme du sulfite de calcium, peu soluble, et du dioxyde de carbone. Le sulfite de calcium est ensuite transformé en bisulfite par une nouvelle molécule d'acide sulfurique. Le bisulfite de calcium, soluble, est récupéré en solution au pied de la tour. Nederlands: Voormalige absorptietoren voor de productie van calciumsulfiet in Zwickau-Crossen (Duitsland). In de toren werd calcium gestapeld, waar van onderen uit zwaveldioxydehoudende gassen en van bovenaf water doorheen gevoerd werd. Dit proces leverde calciumsulfiet op ten behoeve van de plaatselijke papierfabriek. Het calciumsulfiet werd met fijngemalen houtschilfers gemengd en gedurende verschillende uren gekookt. Hierdoor werd de lignine uit het hout verwijderd en bleef zuivere cellulose over, dat de grondstof vormde voor het vervaardigen van zogenaamd houtvrij papier.
