ver on a fine stone bridgeand continued through the undulating country beyondto the north. Small villages were scattered about—Mery to the right, Saccy at the bridgehead, and smallclusters of houses and farms on the countryside overthe river. Some squadrons of dismounted cavalrymenwere standing by their horses in a meadow near thebank of the river. These horsemen had been busyearlier in the day, and had done some hard riding, cutting off stragglers from the retreating GermanArmy Corps. Infantry were hidden from view in thedepths of the valley. We were in an odd positionfor an ambulance—in front of our own battery, whichwas pelting shot into the Germans and which a Germanbattery was trying to locate. When the enemy shellsfell short they fell near us. Our position, however, wasa dress circle box seat as a view-point, so we stoppedwhere we were. It was not every day that one couldlook on at a real live battle. Before dusk came on, anaeroplane appeared over the rid
