of Charles I, belonged to Sir James Bagge, Vice-Admiralof Devon and Cornwall, whose avarice and rapacityearned for him the title of the bottomless Bagge.Towards the close of the century, John Parker wasraised to the peerage as Baron Boringdon, the name ofthe old family seat near Plympton. His son became in1815 the first Earl of Morley. This peer was distin-guished for his business and engineering ability. Hereclaimed a portion of the Laira, the name given to thelower reaches of the Plym, which skirts the grounds ;built an embankment, and near the southern entranceto his estate built an iron bridge over the broad watersof the Laira. It is an interesting fact in connectionwith the Morley family that since the Plymouth Cham-ber of Commerce was established—it is the oldest in thekingdom—successive Earls of Morley have been itspresidents, a position which the present Earl still fills.The house contains pictures by many famous artists,including a unique collection of works by Sir Joshua
