ho occupied for four centuriesModbury Court, a house which stood at the west endof the town. Bigbury-on-Sea is a new resort situated onBigbury Bay, in a charming district which has onlyrecently become accessible to the outer world. Yealmp-ton and Modbury are quaint old-fashioned villages. Or turning down the hillside from Yealmpton, andacross the bridge which spans the Yealm, the river bankcan be followed for a mile through woods and meadowsto the road leading into Newton Ferrers. From here aferry can be taken across to Noss Mayo (p. 99). Onthe return to Plymouth the little steamer running upthe Kitley river to Steer Point station can be used, orone may, in the summer months, return by steamer toPlymouth from Newton Ferrers. The coast-line between the mouths of the Yealm andthe Erme is a pleasant walk to anyone willing to devotethe whole day to a trudge. The district can be reachedby taking train to Yealmpton and then making use ofthe motor omnibus, or by taking an early morning train
