istered tempera onpanel, appears to have been produced by means differentfrom those peculiar to the Pollaiuoli or Baldovinetti. Itseems to be the patiently elaborated piece of a youngbeginner, who could afford to. lavish time anft finish upondetails of borders, pearls, jewels, locks and feathers.4 Itstands clearly lower in the scale of art than the injuredfrescos of the walls. The masterpiece of our artists, according to Vasari, isthe martyrdom of S. Sebastian, an altar table completed in1475 for Antonio Pucci in the family chapel at the S.S. 1 Vas. Vol. V. p. 95. 2 Memoriale, ub. sup. p. 17. 3 The chapel was consecrated,according to an inscription onthe arch, on the 11th of Oct. 1456.Rumohr, Forschungen. Vol.II. p. 269. 4 Each lock of hair hangs in atwist by the side of the other, andthe hairs are minutely lined. THE MARTYRDOM OF S. SEBASTIAN; a picture in the National Gallery, by Pollaiuolo. Chap. XVI. MARTYRDOM OF S. SEBASTIAN. 393 Annunziata, and intended to immortalize Gino di Lodo-vico Capponi under the features of the saint.1 Thosewho have daily occasion to see this picture in the Na-tional Gallery2 may admit that it displays an activityand variety of life in the muscular action of the archers,in the sportive caracoles of horses, which remind one ofDonatellos bas-relief for the pediment of the S. Georgeat Orsanmichele. The figure of the martyred saint is afine study of a fairly proportioned nude; but the imitationof a common nature in the coarse extremities and swollenveins or muscles, is quite as apparent as the vulgarity oftype and forms in the saint and his tormentors. It is apiece highly characteristic of the manner of the Pollaiuoli,but one in which the pictorial element is impressed withmore force than upon foregoing examples.
