skey, is a wonderful stream.Bear Lake, its source, is twelve miles long and one mile wide, and is one hundredfeet above the level of the bay. If we are out in a boat on the bay and look in toward the land, we perceivethat Petoskey occupies a series of picturesque undulations that spread out oneither hand, and rise to the rear in the form of an amphitheatre. A lofty lime-Stone cliff flanks the town on the west. Its top is crowned with trees, amongwhich are discovered the tents of many vacation tourists who are camping out.Behind them rises an overtopping eminence, dotted with pretentious villas ofwealthy residents. From the verge of this cliff the outlook is superb. Across,five miles distant, is the ridge of hills that line the opposite side of the LittleTraverse Bay. These sweep round in a symmetrical curve to the head of thebay, two miles to the right, and then follow the hither shore until they rise andterminate in high cliffs. All along in that direction, as far as sight can reach,

giants staircase, MACKINAC ISLAND. can be traced the white line of a pebbly shore limned against the green of thehills ; and then from the base of the cliff, in a sweep of two miles or moreto the left, it forms a crescent, ending in a wooded point. Tree-covered hillsslope gently back and upward from the beach, and pretty cottages peep outfrom among their bra^^ches. The principal part of the tov^ lies in the bowlof the amphitheatre, from which a practicable road leads through a ravineto the long pier which projects from the hollow of the crescent into the bay.This pier gives additional character and life to the scenery. Petoskey has a water front of one and one-half miles, and extends inlandabout the same distance : it is of comparatively recent date. The locomotiveengine, that vanguard of civilization, first pierced this almost interminablenorthern wilderness in 1S74.
