English: Whole length portrait of a naval officer standing in profile to the right. His hair is in a small pig-tail queue; his hat is under his right arm. In his right hand is a telescope; in his left a long cane. He stands in front of a low gun-embrasure behind which is the sea, with ships at anchor; in the distance is the Isle of Wight. 20 January 1774
