Title |
A complete Early Medieval silver wire ring from a toilet set (5th-10th century). |
||
Description |
English: A complete Early Medieval silver wire ring from a toilet set (5th-10th century). The ring is roughly circular in shape and has a circular cross-section of uniform thickness. It is formed from a continuous silver wire, with the ends crossed and then immediately wrapped around the hoop. Diameter: 17.05mm, weight: 0.63g.
Treasure report from Dr Sonja Marzinzik: Similar rings occur in form of Anglo-Saxon slip-knot rings from necklaces. These are, however, usually larger and the distance between the two looped-over ends is bigger. Small rings like this were also sometimes used as suspension rings for toilet sets, although these tend to be made from copper alloy. The ring was probably used to link various toilet implements (ear scoop, pick, etc.); similar examples are numbers 37.7 and 37.8 from Anglo Saxon contexts in Oxfordshire (Macgregor and Bolick 1993, 218). Silver slip-knot rings began to be used on necklaces in the sixth century, but become very much more popular in the seventh. Copper-alloy slip-knot rings are found in both centuries, but the small type securing a toilet set is more common in the sixth. |
