Description
English: A Torpedoed Tramp Steamer off the Longships, Cornwall, 1918

image: A tramp-steamer in dazzle camouflage keeled over to port and grounded on a cliff-lined Cornish beach. A heavy sea flecked with foam washes over the wreck, while a stormy sky passes overhead. Shafts of sunlight illuminate the sea and cliffs with an unearthly glow. The remains of an earlier wreck can be seen stranded on the point in the upper left.

Note: Beaumaris, a cargo ship was torpedoed and damaged in the Atlantic Ocean 2.5 nautical miles (4.6 km) off the Longships Lighthouse by SM U-53 ( Imperial German Navy). She was beached in Whitesand Bay but was a total loss. Her crew survived.
Date 1918 (First World War)

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
