Title
A Medieval copper alloy purse frame (15th century).
Description
English: A Medieval copper alloy purse frame (15th century). The purse frame comprises two semi-circular elements that are hinged together. One is flat, the other has a L-shaped cross-section. Both have six circular perforations arranged equidistantly around the frame to attach the frame to the cloth purse. At the base of the frame is a catch mechanism to secure the two halves. On one side is the small loop and a simple lever mechanism with a small hole through the frame beneath and the other side has the hook which would connect with the loop. Originally John Clark believes there would have been a button which fitted through the hole in the frame that would press the lever and free the hook from the loop. The button is now missing. The ends of the frames have loop terminals which with a cross bar form the hinge mechanism for the purse. The wire handle fits through these loops and forms the cross bar for the hinge. The handle is a simple strip of wire; this is probably a repair replacement as it does not fit the style nor standard of quality of the rest of the purse frame.

Dimensions: length: 51.52mm; width: 58.54mm; thickness: 4.03mm; weight: 11.89g.
