Title
Nederlands: In Batavia wordt een 'tijger' neergeschoten
English: A 'tiger' being shot on Batavia
Description

English: A tiger being shot on Batavia.

The plate is taken from the work 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien' by Francois Valentyn.

The tiger had escaped from his stall and wandered about freely inside Batavia castle until it was shot.

A striking detail is that the 'teiger' depicted is spotted.

Various figures on the square are depicted running away in fear.

The socalled tiger is probably a leopard.
