Title
English: A.H. Waite and camera, ca. 1895
Description
English:

Alvin H. Waite lived in Tacoma in the 1890s and made his living tuning pianos. By 1901 he had moved his business to Seattle. Waite was also an amateur photographer who enjoyed hiking and other outdoor activities. Waite is thought to be the first photographer to carry a camera up Mount Rainier. Judging by the large size of many cameras of the time, this was probably quite a challenge. This photo of Alvin H. Waite and his camera was taken by his friend and fellow-photographer William H. Wilcox. It was probably taken in the 1890s in Tacoma, where they both lived at the time.

Photograph from Wilcox Collection photograph album, 1993.1.
