The original black and white logo... appeared on the cover of "Elementary Cryptanalysis: A Study of Ciphers and Their Solution" by Helen Fouché Gaines. That book was published in 1939 and registered for copyright (A134084). However, it's copyright was not renewed and thus that particular black and white logo on the cover is now in the public domain.
