Of thehundred and forty-six days covered by the tour,only fifty-seven were devoted to cricket, whiletwenty-live were spent in coaches, carts, andrailway trains. Of the matches, it is only neces-sary to say that nineteen were played, thirteenwon, and four lost.1889 The visit and tour of a team of Philadelphianamateur cricketers added to the interest ofEnglish cricket this season. The Philadelphianscame over with the most unselfish motives to testtheir strength by contests with English clubs,and to see English cricket played at its best foreducational purposes. As they handed theirshare of all gate receipts to the CricketersFund, their tour commended itself to all loversof the game, and was a complete success inevery respect.
