FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District began construction in October 2011 on a $35.7 million headquarters for the 82nd Airborne Division, shown here under construction on Sept. 11, 2012. The project is scheduled for completion in autumn 2013. The three-story, 143,090 square-foot building was designed to reduce energy usage by 40 percent and water usage by 50 percent, compared to an average facility of its type. The project has been nicknamed “mini-FORSCOM” because of its similarities to a large-scale, $300 million headquarters the Corps and prime contractor Hensel Phelps finished in 2011 on Fort Bragg for the Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) and Reserve Command. Both headquarters use a similar architectural style and have exteriors constructed with precast brick panels, which reduce construction time, save money, and last as long as traditional brick work. They both have atrium skylights, command terraces, ceremonial parade yards, joint operations centers, conference rooms, and other features specific to a command and control facility. Sauer Inc. is the prime contractor for the 82nd Headquarters project. The former 82nd Division Headquarters was built in 1960 as a Non-Commissioned Officer’s club and was later renovated in 1980 as a headquarters. The facility will be demolished as part of the construction contract for the new headquarters project. USACE photo by Tracy Robillard. |
