Summary[edit]

Description
English: 330-PS-8850-1: U.S. Navy Conducts Physical Study By Telephone. Captain Norman Les Barr, MC, USN, explains the functions of the equipment used in transmitting physiciological information. Master Caption for all: A new technique, which will permit a constant watch on the physical condition of animal and human occupants of space vehicles has been developed by the U.S. Navy Medical Department. Measurements of body functions such as blood pressure, temperature, breath sounds, heart sounds, brain waves and electrocardiograms are superimposed on carrier waves which are transmitted over world-wide and telephone circuits. These are restored to their original form at the Naval Medical Research Institute where they are received by telephone. In this way, the exact physical condition of Earth orbiting passengers can be known constantly. In addition to its application to outer space research, this technique will enable isolated medical practitioners who need the services of medical specialists, available only in a large city many miles distant to transmit all the essential information to the specialist by telephone. If a consultant is not available at the time of the call, information can be recorded on a magnetic tape and the entire examination episode repeated at his convenience. The specialists can hear the heart monitoring, see the pulse pressure, and hear the breath sounds, just as he could if the patient was present in his office. The telephone was developed at the Naval Medical Research Institute, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, under the direction of Captain Norman Lee Barr, MC, U.S. Navy, March 21, 1958.
