Summary[edit]

Description 330-PSA-214-63 (USN 823640): McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Rear Admiral James R. Reedy, USN, Commander of the Navy’s Antarctic Support Forces, congratulates Commander George E. Kelly, USN, on his historic non-stop flight to McMurdo from Capetown, South Africa. Commander Robert Marvel, USN, Officer in Charge of the “Deepfreeze” station during the winter, (center), is onhand to greet the admiral. Reedy and Marvel, Commanding Officer of Air Development Squadron Six, made the 4,700 mile transpolar flight in 14 hours and 31 minutes. They flew a ski-equipped C-130 “Hercules” with extra interior 3,600 gallon fuel tanks. Although the tanks gave the plane a take-off weight of 45,000 pounds, 10,000 over its normal weight – it lifted off the Capetown runway on schedule, September 30. Photograph by PH2 T.J. Regina, released October 8, 1963. (2015/10/20).
