Summary[edit]

Description 330-PSA-196-61 (80-KN-2664): An unmanned weather station, officially designated as the Navy Oceanographic and Meteorological Automatic Device (NOMAD), is moored in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico keeping a watchful eye on approaching turbulent weather. The 20 by 10 foot platform is designed to monitor and report weather data automatically from a surrounding area of hundreds of miles of open water. Additional NOMAD units now are in production and the Navy is planning on stationing seven in areas of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans where hurricanes and typhoons are most frequent. Photograph released September 7, 1961. (9/22/2015).
