Description 26-G-06-04-41: Normandy Invasion, June 1944. They’re Off! The Invasion’s On! America had her first look at the D-Day invasion of the French coast, when this photograph by Coast Guard combat photographer S. Scot Wigle appeared in newspapers from coast to coast on June 6, 1944. It shows columns of infantry landing craft, each with a barrage balloon as protection against Nazi strafing planes, moving across the English Channel, June 6, 1944. (5/19/2015).
