Summary[edit]

Description

Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) enabled the Kit Carson Electric Co-op (KCEC) launch its $64 million broadband fiber-to-the-home project with a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Aug. 17, 2011 in Taos, NM. KCEC’s project to build an emergency command and communications center for the region is now complete and the two projects are linked since the command center will act as project headquarters for the broadband build-out. The rural broadband project will extend 100 mbps service at very affordable rates to over 20,000 rural residents of Taos, Colfax and Rio Arriba counties in NM. The funds are 70 percent ARRA dollars and 30 percent from the Co-op. In addition to economic development, educational, public safety and healthcare applications, the broadband project will also enable ‘smart grid’ and ‘green grid’ applications with increased opportunities for new

jobs. (L to R) NM State Representative Roberto Bobby J.
