Description
English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item A.42 Socketed Axe; South Eastern - Plain (Petters type A.1)

Cast copper alloy socketed axe. Wide upper mouth moulding with narrower moulding below. Side loop extends from lower mouth moulding. Casting seams down sides. Heavily corroded at mouth end, brass patina on blade end. Sides slightly concave, flaring out at blade end. Small amount of damage to sharp blade edge. Mouth is square with rounded corners. Body has rectangular cross section. Socket contains fragment of another socketed axe with a prominent internal ridge. Possible organic material.

Length: 82.22mm. Weight: 212 grams. Socket opening: 30.30mm by 26.41mm. Mouth: 40.41mm by 39.05mm. Blade end: 45.09mm
