As commerce increased so did the paperwork that went with it. This almost grinded trading to a halt.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: We had computers in 1984. We also had proprietary standards which were of almost no use to anyone involved in commerce and which slowed the smooth flow of information between trading partners especially at international level. As computers could not communicate between each other the amount of paperwork continued to increase. Clearance of goods in some of the most important customs hubs would take longer than ten days, substantially impairing goods exchange, increasing costs and times of delivery. International electronic data interchange standards begun to be introduced. This first led to EDI and later to the development of E-commerce.
