| Description |
"A Summer's Evening", an 1882 French print (engraved by C. Manigaud after E. Bodoy, reprinted in U.S.) which shows a range of early 1880's clothing styles as seen during an excursion to the seaside. Shown are two examples of women's semi-formal outdoors clothes, a corresponding little girl's outfit (see Image:1868-skirt-lengths-girl-ages-Harpers-Bazar.gif for an explanation of the much shorter skirt length), two adult male riding outfits, and one teenage girl's riding habit. None of the people have a visible intention of actually entering the water -- they would have to have completely different clothes for that, and the women and girls would need elaborate facilities in which to change clothes.
