| Description |
English: This loft building at 1426 South Jackson Street was built in 1909-10 by the New York-based w:United Wireless Telegraph Company, once the largest radio communications firm in the United States, as a factory to manufacture and distribute their equipment for the Pacific Coast market. A tall catenary serving an in-house telegraph station once towered over the building's roof. Not long after their Seattle plant opened, the company would become mired in a massive fraud scandal that would bankrupt them by 1912, effectively ending the factory's short life. The Jackson Street building would be purchased by the Seattle board of education and served as their headquarters for the next decade, housing administrators as well as the offices of district architect Edgar Blair. The building was converted to residential use in the early 1920s and currently is used as office space. |
