La barque renfermant le Christ et ses disciple-est assaillie par les flots furieux, contre lesquelsles rameurs sont impuissants à lutter. A lun deuxest échappé laviron, quil cherche, épouvanté, àrattraper. Tandis que le Christ, la tête entourée duneauréole, dort dun sommeil calme que rien netrouble, lépouvante et le désespoir régnent parmiles neuf autres occupants de la barque. Au fond, la côte montagneuse se détache surun ciel de tempête. Par la merveilleuse splendeur du coloris.lénergie des gestes, la conception dramatique etgrandiose, ce tableau est un des chefs-dœuvre dumaître, et lune des plus hautes expressions delart moderne. A droite, amarré contre le quai, est un voilierdont les deux mâts dépassent, en hauteur, ungroupe darbres qui, lui-même, masque en partieles maisons en briques du quai. A gauche, sur les eaux du port, savance uncanot avec trois personnages. Au fond, on aperçoit la mâture dautresvoiliers, un moulin à vent et un pont àbascule. La lumière chaude du soleil couchant traverselatmosphère brumeuse du soir et se reflète dansleau du bassin. Signé à gauche : Jongkùi(/, 1871, et à droite :Rotterdam. Toile.
