Summary[edit]
Description"Turritella Agate" (partially chertified fossiliferous lacustrine limestone) (Laney Member, Green River Formation, Middle Eocene; North Barrel Springs Draw, south of Wamsutter, Wyoming, USA) 9 (19849516426).jpg |
"Turritella Agate" - partially chertified fossiliferous lacustrine limestone in the Eocene of Wyoming, USA. This is a sample of Wyoming's famous "Turritella Agate" in the Green River Formation. It consists of richly fossiliferous dark chert with abundant Elimia tenera gastropods (misnamed "Turritella" by rockhounds). The brownish areas of the bed are fossiliferous limestone - the dark areas of the bed are limestone that has been chertified. This fossil snail horizon was deposited in an ancient lake environment, as was the rest of the Green River Formation. Classification of Elimia fossil snails: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Cerithioidea, Pleuroceridae Stratigraphy: base of Hartt Cabin Bed, Laney Member, Green River Formation, Middle Eocene Locality: outcrop & talus west of Delaney Rim Road (~200 meters northeast of BP America Production Company's Wild Rose Well # 35-1) (NE1/4 SE1/4 Section 35, T18N, R95W), northern side of North Barrel Springs Draw, ~21 km south-southwest of Wamsutter, Wyoming, USA (41° 29' 34.17" North, 108° 04' 04.57" West) |
